FIGHT - Some thoughts on {Breast} Cancer Awareness
The above photo is in memory of my forever friend and soul-sister, Traci Ann Bull (TAB), and in honor of all those who have fought, are fighting, and survivors of breast cancer. So, so many amazing women I have had the privilege of knowing and the ones I continue to know.
I originally penned this post in October, as it’s traditionally Breast Cancer Awareness month, and that time of year makes me reflect more than normal on how life can change so suddenly and how precious it is. Traci was one of the fiercest fighters I know, and God honored her fight. Her soul has arrived in heaven, which is the BEST reward I can think of for anyone, but especially after all her braveness and grace in the face of everything that came at her.
This was not intended to be my first-ever blog post, but it’s kind of appropriate. The anniversary of Traci’s victory and healing in heaven is today, January 8.
The word that keeps coming to my mind, again and again, in my reflections is: FIGHT. It seems anti-climatic as most every cancer awareness campaign contains the word. But for me, the word also encompasses fighting every cancer and also fighting in the pro-active sense of the word.
So here’s my plea to all, from my ‘soapbox’, and to myself also:
EARLY DETECTION!!!
Pay attention to your health. Listen to your instincts and seek answers even if someone tells you “It’s nothing”, but your gut tells you differently. Get the screening!!! Don’t put it off.
FIGHT. FIGHT to keep and stay healthy. If the report comes back not-so-good, FIGHT. FIGHT for yourself, for your family and friends, for the purpose(s) you have on this planet that shouldn’t go undone.
This past year I noticed not only the campaigns for Breast Cancer Awareness but also the Crucial Catch campaign sponsored be the NFL caught my eye (as I am an avid football fan!). The Crucial Catch speaks to early detection and prevention of ALL types of cancer.
I’m no expert and thankfully I have not been diagnosed nor at this time do I suspect I have any type of cancer. But I have many precious men and women all around me who this disease has affected. Even one is one too many.
So please, please FIGHT. FIGHT early and FIGHT hard. If someone you know is in the middle of their FIGHT, pray, FIGHT with them, be there, do what you can. I’m sure they too would tell you, don’t ignore any signs.
PREVENT. GET TESTED. GET SCREENED. FIGHT.
